Difference between MS Outlook and MS Outlook Express

Microsoft Outlook Express and Microsoft Outlook are two popular e-mail clients, developed and marketed by Microsoft Corporation. Both of these applications were designed for different requirements and different audiences. These applications have number of differences as stated below:

  • Microsoft Outlook stores data in the form of PST (Personal Storage), whereas Outlook Express store data in DBX or MBX files.
  • OE is a simple Internet mail program, which is the part of Internet Explorer and Windows while Outlook is the full-featured personal information manager, which is the part of Microsoft Office Suite of Products.
  • Outlook has a number of advanced features like calendar, tasks, journals, automatic backup into archive file and so on, but Outlook Express do not provide these facilities.
  • Outlook stores all of your data in a single PST file while Outlook Express creates a separate DBX or MBX file for every folder.
  • Outlook includes Inbox Repair Tool to fix PST corruption, whereas Outlook Express does not include any repair utility.
  • In Microsoft Outlook, Address Book is an extremely sophisticated content management system unlike simple address book in Outlook Express.
  • Outlook allows you to program it using VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) but Outlook Express does not.
  • Outlook can be used in a collaborative messaging environment with Microsoft Exchange Server, but Outlook Express can not be used for this purpose.
  • Microsoft Outlook is a highly interoperable application that can be used in combination with other programs like Microsoft Word to carry out mail-merge in email or to automate the outgoing mail messages; however Microsoft Outlook Express doesn't interact with other applications.

Along with these differences, the repair and recovery software for both of these applications are also different.
